Just Transitions for Fossil Fuel Workers and Communities
As we have already discussed, often when the coal or fossil fuel industry closes up or makes a mess, they leave it all behind for the workers and community to clean up. Activities and efforts in the clean energy transition must consider the needs of fossil fuel workers and communities, and not leave them behind. Organizations like the Just Transition Fund exist to help coal communities plan their transition to a clean economy after coal.
They have a ton of specialized services and grants, and an entire blueprint to help communities from start to finish:
The National Resources Defense Council is another organization that advocates for just transitions through local representation, equity, and retraining. We just have to stop harming people. We can totally do it, and it’s going to make everything better.
There are a ton of equity and just transition provisions in CEJA, so be sure to check out that info sheet in the Toolkit in Part 3.
