Our energy sector is in the midst of a transition away from coal and fossil fuels. For communities that have relied on industries like coal as economic backbones, and those that have been most impacted by the burdens of fossil fuel pollution, this inevitable transition brings with it an urgent need for solutions. Illinois must implement policy solutions that support local communities, replace lost tax revenue, put workers back to work, and bring in new investments and businesses that create new job opportunities and economic revitalization. Utility companies and energy corporations have profited at the expense of Illinois ratepayers for too long and it is time for them to be responsible partners, not beneficiaries, in supporting Illinois’ energy transition. The Clean Energy Jobs Act is the only comprehensive energy legislation in Illinois that delivers real support to Illinois’ transitioning energy workers and communities all across the state. Hundreds of organizations and thousands of people have provided input to help develop these policy solutions and programs to help Illinois re-envision and re-invest in communities that need it the most.
