Carbondale Community Resilience Fair – Towards a Sustainable and Equitable Future

Date: Saturday, August 28, 2020, 1:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m.

Location: Carbondale Civic Center

Description: This resilience fair is supported by the City of Carbondale’s Sustainability Commission and many local organizations. The aim is to get community members aware of and taking action towards our sustainable and equitable future. The event includes education on opportunities for community and business development, a discussion panel on financial resources, a listen-lead-share for community input, and a celebration of local resilience and youth voices. A networking expo will be set up throughout the event for representatives of local businesses and community organizations to provide community members with information about their organizations and activities. Refreshments will be served, and tickets can be purchased online or in person for $10 per person. This is the first in a series of continuing events for the Carbondale region, and will be duplicated across other regions in southern Illinois over the fall of 2021.

Tentative Agenda:

  • 1-2:00 p.m.: Education: Topics include the southern Illinois climate and opportunities for building resilience, the Sustainability Commission’s updates, building worker-owned cooperatives and the circular economy.
  • 2-3:00 p.m.: Discussion Panel on Financial and Other Local Resources: Representatives from the Just Transition Fund, Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity, University of Illinois Extension, Food Works, and USDA Rural Development will discuss financial and other resources for local businesses and community organizations.
  • 3-4:00 p.m.: Listen-Lead-Share activity will enable community members to provide their input towards the direction our communities take towards natural climate solutions, clean energy development, and additional topics.
  • 4-5:00 p.m.: Celebration of local resilience and youth voices.
